Before Application

HANTERRA CERAMIC COMPETITION EVALUATION PROCESS

We occasionally receive questions about how competition entries are evaluated. The Hanterra Ceramic Competition evaluation process consists of two stages. Below, we list the most important points to consider during these stages.
We strongly recommend that you carefully read, and re-read the theme, rules, and evaluation criteria before deciding to participate in the competition. If the entry does not fully meet the competition rules and evaluation criteria, it can be disqualified without being evaluated, which is disappointing for both the applicant and the organization team, especially after investing considerable time and effort.

FIRST STAGE: VISUAL EVALUATION

Congratulations! You have created a work that fully meets the theme, rules, and evaluation criteria. Now, you need to complete the application form on the website and submit it. Applications close at 11:59 PM on the announced submission deadline. No submissions can be made after this time. Before filling out the application form, we recommend you read the following points.

Photo Quality

Since the first stage is based on photos, the quality of the submitted photos is very important. Failure to comply with the listed specifications may result in disqualification in the first stage. Photos should be taken in a well-lit area with no distracting details in the background, preferably against a black or white background.
We recommend checking the following link for tips on photographing ceramic works: "photographing ceramic products"
Photos are required from two different angles that best represent the work. Photos must be clear and taken to accurately reflect the color, texture, and finishing qualities of the piece.
Files should be named as "lastname_workname1" and "lastname_workname2", must have a resolution of 300 dpi, be in JPEG format, and not exceed 5 MB in size. No digital editing (such as Photoshop) is allowed on the photos. If there is a significant difference between the photo and the physical work, the piece will be disqualified when it is submitted for the next round. No text should be placed directly on the image.
Hanterra reserves the right to photograph the works for documentation, education, promotion, etc., and to use the digital images submitted to the competition.

Process Photos

Photos documenting the making process are used when the jury wants to clarify any aspect of the work’s production. Therefore, these photos should be clear, show the critical stages, and accurately reflect colors.
Process photos should not reveal the artist's identity. No text, symbols, or other identifying marks should be visible in the photos.

Accuracy of Application Information

Incomplete or incorrect information in the application forms may result in disqualification during the first evaluation. Due to the high volume of applications and time constraints, there is no opportunity to contact applicants for corrections if there are issues with the forms.
Communication with the applicant will be done via email and, at times, by phone. Therefore, it is crucial to fill out the application form carefully and thoroughly.

Concept and Design Story

This is the most important section of the application form. The jury will evaluate the photos in conjunction with this text. When writing the concept and design story, it is expected that you include details about the technical, aesthetic, and functional decisions made during the creation of the work and what influenced these decisions. The text should be clear, free of grammar and spelling errors, and consist of no more than 200 words/1500 characters.

Re-applying

Each participant can submit a maximum of two works. In cases of duplicate or more than two submissions, only the first two entries will be accepted, and the others will be disqualified.
Once the applications are complete, the jury will receive a list containing the application number, technical details of the work, design story, and photos. No information about the identity of the applicant will be included. All other information provided by the applicant remains confidential with the organization team.

SECOND STAGE: PHYSICAL EVALUATION

Functionality

The Hanterra Ceramic Competition is Turkey’s only competition dedicated to functional handmade ceramics. Therefore, the submitted works must fully and perfectly fulfill their intended function. Aesthetic or technical choices should not compromise functionality. Even highly successful technical or aesthetic pieces are disqualified if they do not function properly.
For example, a vase should be able to hold water without leaking, be easy to clean, and remain balanced and stable when filled with water and plants. If a decision regarding function appears unconventional, the reason must be clearly explained in the design's concept and story.

Originality

Each work is meticulously evaluated for aesthetics, creativity, and originality. Works that copy, significantly reference, or are derivative of previously created pieces are disqualified by the jury.

Technical Competence

Works that pass the first stage and are invited to physical evaluation are thoroughly examined by the jury. Even if not visible in photos, technical errors such as glaze defects, cracks, unsuitable material choices, or improper finishing can lead to disqualification.

OTHER MATTERS

Packaging

Works must be packaged appropriately for transportation. It is essential to remember that the work will need to be transported multiple times for evaluation and exhibition. The artist’s name and the name of the work should be clearly visible on the package.
Even for hand-delivered works, the same packaging requirements apply. Works that are damaged during shipping will not be evaluated. We recommend checking the following link for tips on packaging ceramic works for long-distance shipment: packaging and shipping of ceramic products
